Trailer Watch: Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire

Maybe I’m just a sucker for Sigur Rós, but this is a damn fine trailer. Trainspotting director Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire — an almost universally acclaimed drama (based on Q & A by Vikas Swarup) about an Indian boy who goes on India’s version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? to attract the attention of the girl of his dreams — is a shoo-in for some Oscar attention. It hits US theaters on November 12.

Trailer Watch: International Harry Potter 6 teaser (updated)

An international trailer for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has leaked onto the YouTubes. It will likely disappear very soon. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will hit theaters on July 17, 2009.

UPDATE: Replaced the original YouTube video with a slightly bigger, better-quailty version from Trailer Addict. The fact that it’s on Trailer Addict actually bodes well for the trailer not disappearing soon, too…

Trailer Watch: Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino

A trailer for Gran Torino has come out, and it looks like a heavy-handed “racism is bad” tale with a bit of a throwback to Eastwood’s Dirty Harry days thrown in. In the film, Eastwood plays “Walt Kowalski, an iron-willed veteran living in a changing world, who is forced by his immigrant neighbors to confront his own long-held prejudices” (synopsis courtesy ComingSoon).

As a thriller, it could be fun, although I’m not really sold on Eastwood as a 78-year-old bad-ass — which isn’t to say he couldn’t kick my ass. (Because details of the plot were kept under wraps, an early rumor suggested that Gran Torino was, in fact, a Dirty Harry movie. It’s not.)

One interesting thing for comics fans to note, in the credits: Jenette Kahn, the former President and Editor-in-Chief of DC Comics, has an Executive Producer credit. Her only other producing credit was for last year’s The Flock, which hit only the Palm Beach International Film Festival before going straight to DVD (although it had proper theatrical releases in other countries, apparently).

Gran Torino will be released on December 17th. Eastwood’s other 2008 release, The Changeling, comes out today.

Trailer Watch: Notorious full trailer

As biopics go, the Notorious B.I.G. biopic Notorious is looking really good. A teaser trailer came out a little while ago (as Multiplex readers know), but the first full-length trailer has gone up at Apple, where you can check both trailers out in HD. Notorious hits theaters on January 16, 2009.

Trailer Watch: Let the Right One In red band trailer

Although Let the Right One In has been praised to high heaven, I haven’t really been paying a whole lot of attention to it — for the simple and entirely subjective reason that I find vampires (as straight genre, as metaphor, as anything) horribly uninteresting. The last vampire story I actually enjoyed was the Preacher one-shot, Cassidy: Blood and Whiskey, and that was largely because it mercilessly ridiculed that whole angsty Anne Rice-style vampire genre.

Anyway, while this movie does look very well-done from a technical standpoint, I still can’t muster up any enthusiasm about it, but I thought some of you guys might think differently. An earlier domestic trailer can be found over at Apple. The film hits limited release stateside on October 24th.
