Movie Make-out

Trailer Watch: Tron: Legacy trailer

Yeah. This looks pretty damned good.

Tron: Legacy was directed by Joseph Kosinski and stars Jeff Bridges, Michael Sheen, and Olivia Wilde. It hits theaters — in 3D, of course — on December 17, 2010.

  • First, this looks pretty cool.

Secondly, since CGI of this era is all Avatar-y, how do you know you're in a video game? The interesting part of the first movie was that it didn't look like real life, but modern games do. I wonder if they'll address this.

Thirdly, didn't Flynn escape the digital world and become CEO of his company?

Fourthly, while cool looking, the video game world of now would be nothing but FPSs, MMPORPGs and far-too-deep story games like Bioshock rather than a lot of different gladiatorial games.

You've got to remember that the world of TRON is the computer itself, and each program is metaphorically presented as a person. Thus, each FPS or MMORPG would be an individual program (or a team, one for each exe and dll), a light-lined "person" that is really good at drawing, imitating voices, and talking to other users' copies of the same program. Imagine a bunch of Cliffy B's chatting about what their user just did in the game. Boring.

Viruses and spyware, however, would be extremely good at gladatorial combat (the ruination of other programs). The only one who can stand against such epic threats is the one they call "Dr. Norton."
  • 3) They address that: he goes back in. (Both according to the trailer -- indirectly -- and from interviews I've read.)
