Trailer Watch: Clash of the Titans teaser trailer

Seeing as the new Clash of the Titans is already a remake of a pastiche of bits and pieces of Greek mythology that got served up around state of the art special effects scenes, my inner English literature nerd is blessedly silent while watching this teaser trailer for the new movie:

Just in case you couldn’t read the plot synopsis:

In Clash of the Titans, the ultimate struggle for power pits men against kings and kings against gods. But the war between the gods themselves could destroy the world. Born of a god but raised as a man, Perseus (Sam Worthington) is helpless to save his family from Hades (Ralph Fiennes), vengeful god of the underworld. With nothing left to lose, Perseus volunteers to lead a dangerous mission to defeat Hades before he can seize power from Zeus (Liam Neeson) and unleash hell on earth. Leading a daring band of warriors, Perseus sets off on a perilous journey deep into forbidden worlds. Battling unholy demons and fearsome beasts, he will only survive if he can accept his power as a god, defy his fate and create his own destiny.

I know what I just wrote regarding movies that have significant screentime for female characters, but at the same time I am also wondering just who this Alexa Davalos chick is and why the editors chose to put her in a trailer that’s all about bad-assery if her role as Andromeda is to be the damsel in distress. I want to see more monsters! And more of Sam Worthington kicking those monsters in the teeth!

Clash of the Titans will be released in the U.S. on March 26, 2010.

    The "Titans Will Clash" thing was just awful and completely turns me off. That and the rest of the trailer.
    Well, except Pete Postlethwaite. That guy is awesome!
  • Even though there wasn't much pausing in the trailer to see the acting, it also felt a little like Ewe Boll with a budget.

    The soundtrack bugged me , but if I accepted it in "Samurai Fiction" there's no reason why I can't accept it with Greeks.

    The beauty of myth and legend is that the tales get exaggerated and made all the more viscerally appealing to keep their audience rapt. It's been the nature of things since before written language. I'm not expecting a documentary, I'm expecting epic sword and sandal story time with popcorn, and it looks like I'll get it.
  • God this looks brilliant. However, I groaned when they did the 'Titans Will Clash' thing. That was just awful.
    But last months Empire had a great article on this and I'm pretty pumped now.
  • I do have to agree with everyone else who had problems with the mythology. They've got the basics there. Perseus kills Medusa kills sea monster (which they called the Kraken right?) and then kills king and his cohorts. But they threw in some kind of revenge on Mt Olympus right? It's been forever since I've seen the original so I'm pretty lost on the story.

    That looks terrible. Just another vehicle for special effects, which alone don't do it for me anymore.

    I'm a bit "hmm" about this, however, some of the music is apparently going to be done by Matt Bellamy, the singer/guitarist of Muse, and that half-a-second where the scorpion's tail hit the ground in time to the rock 'n' roll guitars was pretty awesome.

    Troy + 300 + CGI Beowulf + God of War = this movie = Over-produced Americanized version of myths and stories that actually used to be pretty cool


    In summary:
    At first I was like, "Oh!" but then I was like, "Oh..."

    So does anyone making these movies even read Greek mythology? I think I just read a synopsis of Star Wars, except Luke = Perseus, Hades = Darth Vader, "forbidden worlds" = "The Death Star", and "accept his power as a god" = "learn the ways of the Jedi and The Force".

    Of course, even as I declare all these shenanigans, I have to admit that I'm still going to see the movie. I'm such a tool.

    It could be argued that Star Wars epitomized the adventure genre and every other movie in it's ilk follows the formula to some degree.

    Of course, that doesn't make a movie bad. However, I think whoever thought up the tagline "Titans will CLASH" should be fired.

    I'm grinning like a maniac after seeing that, it was awesome!
  • Holy shit, that looks awesome! And I like the music, too (which I'm sure will end up nowhere near the final cut of the film).
