Raimi and Maguire may be back for Spider-Man 4 (updated)

Deadline Hollywood Daily’s Nikki Finke is reporting that both Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire have signed onto the next sequel — and possibly a two-fer, with parts 4 and 5 being shot back to back. This jibes with a scoop from Cinematical earlier in the summer about James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) turning in draft for the fourth film.

One of her sources says, “once you find out who the villain is, you’ll know who’s playing it” — which of course hints at the Lizard. (Dylan Baker played the not-yet-lizard-like Dr. Connors in #s 2 and 3.)

No word on Kirsten Dunst, but I’m guessing the part is hers for the taking, if she wants it.

Oh — and the targeted release date? May 4, 2011.

This is all definitely unconfirmed stuff — certainly not official — but nothing in the article immediately trips off my Spidey-sense, so… maybe?

UPDATE (9/6): The Hollywood Reporter seems to corroborate this news, although it’s unclear whether they confirmed this with Sony/Columbia or are simply parroting Finke’s rumors:

The actor and helmer are said to be close to locking in a deal to return for the fourth and fifth installments of the studio’s top-grossing Spider-Man franchise, with Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad producing.

In hopes of containing costs, Columbia is considering shooting the films back-to-back starting in fall 2009.…

HR also provides some details on a Venom update Finke mentioned: Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (Zombieland) have been hired to continue work on the script first drafted by Jacob Estes.

Oh come on. How many DECADES of comics have there been? They could keep making Spider-Man movies forever. There are plenty of characters and stories left to wring out of it. There's absolutely no reason it couldn't be just like the Bond franchse.

But what they need to do is (1) keep the studio's bright ideas to themselves (they're the ones who coerced Raimi into shoehorning Venom in, and (2) get some fresh creative blood in there. James Vanderbilt (the screenwriter) may be enough, but I was really hoping for a new director and cast…

Oh, man. What made them think there's two movies left in this [incarnation of the] franchise? The third one was bad for all kinds of reasons.

I sense Raimi veering off the track altogether and hitting us with the Spidey equivalent of 'Batman and Robin'. He's already set us up for it with the homage to cheese that was Spider-Man 3 (Batman Forever was the preparatory blow in the other instance). I swear that dancing scene was lifted directly from Along came Polly.

Truly, the full extent of the symbiote's evil was its ability to make Tobey Maguire bounce down the street pointing and winking at a lineup of women from New York Fashion Week.

Not really, Phrenologist; it doesn't say WHO, specifically, you're going to meet. If the signing rumor is bogus, you could end up meeting Jake Gyllenhaal and Alicia Witt, not Maguire and Dunst.

Movie two perfectly set up The Lizard AND Man-Wolf/Stargod. They weren't used because all Sony saw was profits.

Well, the character is definitely annoying enough for that to potentially be true. I've seen video footage a while ago of both her and Tobey Maguire talking about when they heard there was going to be a third movie, and they seemed... unenthused.

I hope to god that they don't put Spider-Man in the Avengers movie, because Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst are both annoying.

I had heard a while back that Dunst hated her Mary Jane part so much that she kind of wished her character would be killed, just so she wouldn't have to do it anymore.

But of course, that could just be hearsay.
